Version 0.2: Now Available
Sunrise » Devlog
Hello! Today, I'm excited to announce that Sunrise version 0.2 is now available! Here's the extensive changelog:
Additions (Features):
- Completely Remastered Create Mode
- Featuring: Pan & Zoom Controls, Redesigned Menus, Better Playtesting, and Locked Features to hint what's next. The original one was a little bit cluttered and used the default GameMaker GUI paired with a .DLL core, so we scrapped that and decided to make our own UI handler for the create mode, which can show different toggles, buttons, and text, alongside others. Saving and Loading levels is also an option now. Importing still has a long way to go, especially when it comes to making compatibility with importing levels from previous versions, as nonexistent objects can cause many errors, but we're trying!
- New Story Mode Menu & Updated Options Menu
- The Story Mode menu is now available, however, the story mode will be kept off-limits. The Options menu has also been very heavily overhauled to show toggles, descriptions, and more. Some options however are non-functional and will be fixed later.
- Remastered Platformer Controls & Moveset
- The platformer mode has been completely rewritten from scratch, including many fancy new features to both make play easier and more smooth, as well as paving the way for future updates to contain new moves for our characters
- Account Selection Menu
- To make things easier, we've added an account selection menu in case there's multiple users on one computer! It allows you to have customized settings for each profile and a special new menu by pressing the Accounts button above the Exit Game button in the Main Menu (or [Y] / [TRIANGLE] / [X] depending on your controller type).
- New HUD and UI Mechanics
- 3 new things in one entry? Yeah. A new HUD display where you can see the status of how you're doing in a level. There's also a score tally, bit meter, note meter, and more. Combos have been added as well, so you can rack up score for getting the most points.
- Credits
- See who worked on or helped with various aspects of the game! There's a lot here...
- Discord Rich Presence
- Discord RPC has been added, which shows details about your current session. Currently, it only displays one thing, but it'll be updated in the future to dynamically change.
Additions (Gameplay Mechanics):
- Auto Terrain
- Auto-terrain is now a feature in-game for the Create Mode. It's a simplified tool to make placing in tiles and platforms much easier. There are two types of terrain presets, Grass / Dirt and Metal. The tile will change sprites based on what's surrounding it (if there's a grass tile above a grass tile, it'll turn into dirt, etc.)
Additions (Technical):
- Pressing F2 to take a screenshot
- In this build, whenever you press F2, the game takes a screenshot and saves it as a .PNG, which can be useful at times. The screenshots are stored in the game's AppData folder (%appdata% or AppData\Roaming).
- Pressing F11 to enter Fullscreen
- You can now press F11 to enter fullscreen. Borderless fullscreen support is coming soon!
- New Audio Buffer & Ambient Sound Engine
- To prevent overlapping sounds, we've added an audio buffer to the game, which allows for non-overlapping sounds, sounds that are too loud, and music being switched into playing, without restarting any playback, which will be useful for an update in the future possibly. As well as that, instead of ambient sounds being played on set timers with set values, ambient sounds will now play depending on level, player, time limit, lighting, zone, and sometimes randomized conditions (e.g. dark environments will allow for playing more eerie ambient sounds).
- New Tile Lighting Engine
- We've added a new tiled lighting engine to the game. You can use light objects, alarms, objects that emit light, or the player's face to navigate around.
- New Dialog Box & Toast Notification System
- Toast notifications, which slide out from the bottom of the screen and hang there for 5 seconds, are also now in the game, each having 4 options for colors: Gray (normal), Green (success), Yellow (warning), and Red (failure / error).
- Controller Support
- This one was one I've had planned for a while, controller support is now in the game with a fancy new menu for managing controller settings, controller type, and more. The Create Mode has been optimized for Create Mode as well and the new platformer mode supports the controller too! You can see controller button tips in the bottom left of your screen for help.
Tweaks & Changes:
- Jump Buffer for Dash
- Originally, there was no jump buffer, which made Dash's jumping feel a little bit clunky, but we've fixed that with a new jump buffer.
- Main Menu Partial Redesign
- We've touched up on the main menu buttons and the options menu, featuring new sub-menus. The exit button was completely remade, whilst the Main Menu buttons took on their colored versions previously unused in Version 0.1. (they'll go grayscale if you're using a controller and not highlighting them).
- Updated Music Tracks for Create Mode
Bug Fixes:
- Sounds being extremely louder than they should be are no longer that way
Known Issues:
- You can't change any settings if you're using a controller
- If you hotswitch to keyboard and mouse controls from a controller, your cursor won't re-appear.
- If you hotswitch to controller from keyboard and mouse controls, you'll need to refresh the current room to get controller support working. This is expected behavior but may be fixed in a future update.
- Transitions in Create Mode are still misaligned (or won't appear).
- The Edit tab's buttons in Create Mode do nothing, that's normal but it's to be updated in the future.
- Canceling out of a Open File or Save File dialog box will crash the game.
